Considered by many to be the greatest rock guitarist of all time, Hendrix was an enigmatic, contradictory character: an impassioned, extroverted performer and at the same time a timid, unsure man. Sadly, Hendrix went the way of many other rock legends, dying well before he reached middle age. This absorbing documentary gives insight into the life and career of Hendrix through both interviews and rare performances. Included are sequences from the Monterey Pop, Woodstock, and Isle of Wight Music Festivals.
An atmospheric and moving documentary film which centres on performances and anecdotes from the octagenarian delta bluesman David 'Honeyboy' Edwards, as well as interviews and archive footage of some of his contemporaries.
The story begins in the 1920s with life as a sharecropper's son, picking cotton on the plantations of the Mississippi delta, and also of the spirituals and work songs which would eventually transform and be reborn as the 'blues'. What follows is Honeyboy's life told in short story form as he reminisces about hopping freight trains, gambling, drinking, womanising, performing and the colourful cast of blues giants that touch his life along the way.
After revivifying the American blues tradition with his 1970s band Roomful of Blues, guitarist Duke Robillard turned his creative energies to exploring other musical genres like jazz, rock, world beat, and swing. This concert film captures Robillard's eclectic style in an intimate live performance recorded at the prestigious Blackstone River Theatre in Cumberland, Rhode Island, delivering both solo-acoustic and full-band renditions of a genre-spanning selection of covers and originals that includes "Honeysuckle Rose," "Lonesome Woman Blues," "Cry Me a River," "Sweet Georgia Brown," and more.
Filmed on November 29, 2002, before a sold-out audience at London's Royal Albert Hall, the Concert for George honors the life and musical contributions of the "quiet Beatle," who lost his battle to cancer a year earlier. The all-star concert spotlights some of Harrison's best-known and best-loved songs, written while he was a Beatle and afterward, with contributions from musical friends including Eric Clapton, Jeff Lynne, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, Billy Preston, Monty Python, Anoushka Shankar, Ravi Shankar, and Ringo Starr, as well as Harrison's son, Dhani Harrison. The first of the set's two discs contains the complete concert, including performances not featured in the theatrical version. The second disc houses the theatrical version, featuring concert highlights, interviews with the performers, rehearsals, and behind-the-scenes footage. The music was overseen by Clapton, who acted as music supervisor, and Lynne, who produced the concert audio in 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS.
While James Brown's unique vocal delivery and pioneering blend of soul, R&B, and funk have made him one of the most influential artists in American music, it's the Godfather of Soul's flamboyant stage presence that testifies to his stature as the hardest-working man in show business. This program captures Mr. Dynamite in his natural element with a concert chosen by the man himself as one of his all-time favorites. Brown's 1981 appearance at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival finds him at his tireless best as he whoops, hollers, and shimmies his way through raw and uninhibited live versions of classics like "Sex Machine," "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," "I Got You (I Feel Good)," "Please, Please, Please," and "It's a Man's Man's Man's World." A bonus segment presents instrumentals performed by the band before Brown took the stage as well as two songs from his 1985 Montreux performance.
The name Ray Charles stands for superstar worldwide. He is an icon in the music world, has a star on Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Fame, a bronze bust enshrined in the Playboy Hall of Fame, and has received fifteen Grammys, the Kennedy Center Honor, and three National Medals of Arts. In his fifty years in the music world, Ray Charles has earned the title "The Legendary Genius of Soul." In this benefit concert for the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, Ray Charles performs all his classics, and delights the audience with a saxophone solo and a duet with special guest and Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist Diane Schuur.
Renowned club owner and blues aficionado Clifford Antone’s life and career are celebrated in this extraordinary film. Performances by blues legends Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Collins, Pinetop Perkins and more ignite the stage along with contemporary and archival footage that capture the magic that famed Austin blues club Antone’s bottled on a nightly basis for over 29 years. In addition to the musical performances, Antone’s: Home of the Blues also includes interviews with Clifford Antone as well as B.B. King, Willie Nelson, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan and much more in this exciting glimpse into the magic of the blues.
Magic Slim is the greatest living proponent of the intense, electrified, Mississippi-to-Chicago blues style that spawned much of the music played by modern blues artists and rockers alike. Its no wonder that Magic Slim & The Teardrops, considered by many to be "the last real Chicago blues band," have become one of the busiest and best-loved touring units today. This live recording, taped in 2005 at the Sierra Nevada Brewery, showcases Slim's slashing, vibrato-drenched guitar, mountain-moving vocals and presents an authentic South Side, back-alley excursion into the true blues.
Recorded in August 1999, this live performance by Bernard Allison perfectly illustrates why he has quickly established himself as one of the most important blues artists of the 21st century. The son of legendary bluesman Luther Allison, Bernard commands his guitar to create a new style of blues that combines tradition with contemporary sounds such as funk, rock, and R&B. Tracks include "Going Down," "Bad Love," "Midnight Creeper," and many more.
